The Interlaken of today has become famous for its endless recreational activities and winter sports, with the town and surrounding Jungfrau region attracting everyone from backpackers to families.

Interlaken sits between two large lakes and is surrounded by exceptional mountain resorts, a number of which are linked by cable car rides, funicular railways and even scenic cog-wheel railways. By summer, Interlaken is home to an almost endless supply of recreational activities, with this summer playground suiting all ages and sporting abilities. There are scene lakeside pathways for walkers, hiking trails through the mountains, sailing and swimming in the lakes, and some very exciting adventure sports, such as white-water rafting and even skydiving. The landscaped is quickly transformed when the winter snow arrives and with more than 150 km / 93 miles of ski runs close by, Interlaken rightly becomes one of Switzerland's leading winter resorts. Jungfrau mountain is one such structure and provides an appealing backdrop to the town, along with the adjacent mountains of Eiger and Mönch. Located either side of the town, Lake Brienz and Lake Thun offer a variety of cruises, with everything from sailing boats to paddle steamers being on offer. Head to the very heart of Interlaken at the Hohematte demonstrates everything that is good about a public park, being filled with flowers and seating, and offering superb mountain views. The Tourist Museum is amongst the most popular of these and documents the history of the Jungfrau's booming tourism industry, with information about its rise to fame. For families, both the miniature trains at the Model Railway Exhibition and the thousands of Teddy bears at Teddyland will be of interest.
